Newport News police seek 3 suspects in 4 armed robberies, shooting

Newport News police are investigating four armed robberies on the city's southeast side that occurred in less than three hours and left one man shot earlier this week.

In the most recent robbery, a 49-year-old Hampton man was shot in the upper thigh. That incident occurred at 1:57 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, at 20th Street and Oak Avenue. The injury was not believed to be life-threatening, police said. It was the first incident in which anyone was injured.

According to the police report, the incidents began at 10:50 p.m. Monday, June 25, on 29th Street and Chestnut Avenue.  Another followed at 12:44 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, at 32nd Street and Chestnut Avenue and then another after that at 1:30 a.m. at 23rd Street and Parish Avenue.  The fourth and final incident was the shooting.

Detectives believe the four incidents are related and possibly the work of the same suspects. The suspect descriptions are similar (three teen males) as is a weapon used in the crimes (a small-caliber, silver or chrome handgun).   The suspects are described as three black males, believed to be teenagers.

One of the suspects is described as a light-skinned black male, between 5-foot-10 and 6 feet tall, who was wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts. The second suspect is described as a dark-skinned black male, with a puffy afro and ponytail, who was wearing a black T-shirt and jeans or denim shorts. The third suspect is described as a dark-skinned black male, with sideburns, who was wearing dark-colored clothing.
