Pedestrian critically injured after being struck by car in Newport News

A Newport News man was critically injured after he allegedly ran into traffic and was struck by a car.

According to a report from Newport News police, the incident occurred at 10:25 p.m. Friday June 30 at the intersection of Dresden Drive and Jefferson Avenue. According to the report, the 63-year-old Newport News man was struck when he ran into the path of a car, northbound on Jefferson, in the roadway's center lane. The driver, a 28-year-old Hampton resident was not injured.

A witness reported that the victim seemed to stop in the road as traffic approached, the report said.

While no charges are pending, an investigation into the incident is ongoing, the report said. Neither alcohol nor the severe weather alert that was in effect at the time of the incident is believed to have been a factor.
