War of 1812 exhibition opens Aug. 18 at Mariners Museum
The Mariners’ Museum of Newport News has announced the opening of a new exhibition on the War of 1812 beginning Saturday, Aug. 18.
The museum is presenting the exhibition in honor of the war’s bicentennial. The presentation will highlight four significant naval themes from that conflict including vengeance, one-on-one ship battles, hard luck and a hero. Graphic representations of naval battles will be on display.
The exhibition is an informative introduction to one of the U.S.’s most misunderstood wars. There will be a public lecture titled The War that Nobody Won: A British Perspective on the War of 1812 by Sir Neil Cossons on Sept. 13.
Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Mariners’ Museum is located at 100 Museum Drive in Newport News.
