A free boat safety course is being offered by the Newport News Police Department for all boaters who have not yet completed the mandatory course.
Effective July 1, all operators of personal watercraft of any age and motorboat operators younger than 30 years old must show proof of completing a boating safety course.
The Virginia Boaters Safety Classroom Course offered by the NNPD is recommended for students older than 12 years old with good reading and comprehension skills who want to learn more about boating fundamentals. Topics that will be covered include boating operations, safe boating practices, navigation signs and boating responsibilities.
The course will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at the police department's Community Outreach Center, 10188 Warwick Blvd., Newport News. Due to limited space, early registration is recommended by visiting register-ed.com/programs/73.
